Évenos

Évenos is a commune with 2128 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

The community Évenos is about 10 km northwest of Toulon. It is composed of three villages together: Sainte Anne d' Evenos, today's administrative center of the municipality, the old village Évenos ( Provençal Nebre ) on a mountain height and Le Broussan.

History

This is the story of the ancient village Évenos. Several centuries before our era, the region of Celto - Ligurian tribes inhabited that have left many traces in the gorges of Destel. In this canyon the town of Saint Esteve, in which was a large chapel with three apses and a leper colony run by the Templars was. The Romans built on the remains of a Greek tower an oppidum. Louis IX. of France, St. Louis, stayed here on his return from the Crusades. The Saracens destroyed several times the village. The people who inhabited the current location Évenos, began in the tenth century, the village with a medieval castle to reinforce.

Around this castle there is a second rampart, which is partially destroyed today. Only the walkway, the " chemin de ronde " is still preserved. A church is part of the castle festivals, it was fixed, you reach the defense platform via a staircase that leads down from the " chemin de ronde ". It was rebuilt in the eighteenth century and got a roof and a small bell tower.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque parish church of Saint -Martin in the old village Évenos was built in the 11th century.
  • In the gorge of Ollioules ( Gorges d' Ollioules ), the Destel Valley ( Vallon de Destel ) in the sandstone rocks Grès de Sainte Anne, and in the cave of Croupatier the wild side of Provencal nature can be experienced.
