Exide Technologies is based in Milton, Georgia, USA, looks back on 120 years of history in the battery business and is now with offices in more than 80 countries, is one of the world's largest producers and recyclers of lead-acid batteries. Exide has been active in the fields of transportation, industrial and recycling, offering comprehensive solutions for storing electrical energy. In fiscal 2010, the Group, with over 10,000 employees and operations in 89 countries, sales of 2.9 billion U.S. dollars. Exide Technologies was founded in 1888 by Thomas Alva Edison. " Exide " dealt with the production of a " excellent oxide " (Excellent oxides) for storing electrical energy.

Acquisitions

In the 90s, Exide Technologies has taken some well-known European battery manufacturer, for example, in 1995, the French CEAC ( Compagnie Européenne d' Accumulateurs ) - a European market leader in lead-acid batteries - in turn, had taken over the Accumulatorenfabrik sunshine in 1991. Exide built the brand "sunshine" into the product portfolio and made off with the traditional brand worldwide as a technology leader in gel batteries a name. In 1995, the U.S. company Exide Technologies took over the shares of Hagen Batterie AG by the Spanish Tudor Group. Hagen battery still exists as a brand name.

Business and Products

Transportation The Transportation division includes the OEM and aftermarket parts business. Exide offers accumulators for cars, trucks, buses, motorcycles, boats, agricultural machinery, construction machinery, caravans and mobile. In addition, Exide offers solutions for micro-hybrid and hybrid vehicles on lead-acid base.

Exide sells its batteries under well-known brands such as Deta, Sonnak, Tudor, Fulmen and offers the following products:

  • From standard, heavy duty and super heavy duty to " HVR " (High Vibration Resistance) high vibration-proof batteries and hybrid batteries with low maintenance to absolutely maintenance-free batteries
  • Motorcycle batteries: from standard wet batteries on AGM to gel technology (based on the Sunshine ® technology )
  • Auxiliary batteries for full-hybrid vehicles and vehicles with start / stop technology
  • Carbon lead-acid batteries for mild hybrid vehicles as an alternative to nickel - metal hydride batteries
  • Lithium batteries for industrial applications

Industry to Industry Division include stationary applications for telecommunication systems, power supply, rail transport, photovoltaic (solar-power related) and uninterruptible power supply (UPS ) as well as mobile applications for forklift trucks, electric vehicles and mining.

GNB Motive Power The program includes applications for material handling, cleaning machines, tractors, Driverless transport systems, electric vehicles and electric wheelchairs.

GNB Network Power applications include telecommunications systems, computers, security systems, security lighting, power plant systems, renewable energy, rail and military equipment.

Sustainable Development

The commitment to environmental protection and occupational safety is reflected among other things in the Managemementprinzipien resist according to which the company is run. In addition to the requirements of the Global Environmental Governance and the Code of Conduct, the production sites certified environmental and occupational health and safety management systems (ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001 ) have introduced. A separate Sustainability Report is currently being prepared.

The plants are certified according to ISO 9001, Exide Technologies has received numerous quality certificates and awards from renowned OEM customers and the spare parts business.

Trade magazine AUTOZEITUNG tested in issue 23 from the year 2010 batteries. The tested Exide batteries achieved top marks. The Society for Technical Supervision and GTÜ FACT GmbH, motor vehicle technical inspection and engineering center examined a total of eight batteries. These batteries are trademarks and products of German and international premium manufacturers that were purchased in auto parts stores, specialist stores and the hardware store. The criteria capacity, cold start performance, deep discharge, durability and handling were, among others, the focus of the test. In order to create realistic conditions, electrical loads were simulated and tested the batteries at minus 20 degrees Celsius in the cooling chamber. Cut in four categories the sunshine PowerPlus of Exide Technologies GmbH with the best values from, closely followed by the Exide Premium Superior Power. In issue 12/2011 of the ADAC has the Exide Premium 722 EA coated with 72 Ah in the ADAC test a top spot and were " good" with the overall assessment. The AUTO BILD test in connection with the Stiftung Warentest several batteries from several manufacturers. All tested Exide batteries AGM EK 700 ( Absorbent Glass Matt ) and ECM EC 700 (Enhanced Cycling Mat ) for high cyclic fatigue loading ( start / stop), as well as Premium EA 722 were rated "good" in issue 12 /2012.

Recycling

Worldwide operates Exide nine plants for recycling of lead-acid batteries. Thus Exide is one of the accumulators manufacturers that can offer a complete product cycle (Total Battery Management ). All components of the battery ( steel and plastic casing, electrolyte and the lead from electrode connector and pole) are recovered in these plants and provided for the manufacture of new products. The high level of recycling makes lead-acid batteries environmentally friendly.

Research and Development

As one of the leading companies in the field of energy storage is dedicated to Exide Technologies to develop innovative products that meet the current and future requirements in terms of energy storage and utilization. Exide operates worldwide analysis laboratories and electrical test facilities, there is also a laboratory for the development of battery prototypes as well as a workshop for the development of hybrid electric vehicles. The development team has worked among others in the fields of design, process engineering, metal, carbon, ceramics and polymers. The Global RD & D focuses on the use of battery chemistries, such as lead - acid and lithium-ion and cross-application technologies in order to achieve a maximization of the power and acceleration of the global development of new products through product and business lines. The organization is particularly concerned with the research and product development for large memory applications in the field of renewable energy ( solar and wind energy) for future vehicle concepts. Each center conducts research in a particular field so that Exide can offer assortment across regional solutions. Research & Development centers in the U.S., Germany and Spain are major information providers for business decisions and lead the way for future development of energy storage.
