Extended Display Identification Data

Extended Display Identification Data (EDID ) is a 128 -byte data structure that describes a display his skills. It contains information such as the manufacturer, date of manufacture, display size, pixel mapping data (only for pure digital panels ), etc.

For the transmission of the data structure from the monitor to the graphics card is usually the I ² C- bus is used.

The combination of EDID and I ² C is called Display Data Channel Version 2 ( DDC2 ). The "2" indicates that DDC2 differs from VESA's original DDC ( there is used a different serial format ).

The EDID data structure is normally stored in a built into the display serial PROM or EEPROM and can be read from there via I ² C ( even if the monitor is not turned on, because the power to the PROM / EEPROM is accomplished via the computer, not on the power supply the monitor ).
