Exterior Gateway Protocol

An Exterior Gateway Protocol (EGP ) is used reachability information between autonomous systems (AS) exchange, that is, information about which networks are reachable. These data then put the router in the autonomous systems to internal routing information for intra -domain routing protocols such as OSPF or Routing Information Protocol (RIP).

  • Define neighbors: Two routers from two different AS communicate with each other if they want to be EGP partners.
  • Accessibility of the neighbors within certain time intervals, it is checked whether the EGP partners are still accessible.
  • Accessibility of networks: This is the main task of EGP. EGP - Partners receive on request a list of available networks in the autonomous systems of the neighbors.

The only currently used EGP is the Border Gateway Protocol ( BGP).

Historical Significance

Prior to the development of a protocol called BGP Exterior Gateway Protocol ( EGP ) was used on the internet. This protocol is no longer used today, but his name has now been generalized to a general term for the above class of routing protocols.
