The municipality is located in the north of Iceland Eyjafjarðarsveit in the region Norðurland eystra. On 1 January 2009 the municipality had 1039 inhabitants.

Geography

The municipality is located in the valley Eyjafjarðardalur. The two larger settlements are Hrafnagil with 235 inhabitants and Kristnes with 51 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2009). The nearest large city is the north end of the valley located at Akureyri.

History

One of incorporation to Akureyri has been issued in a referendum on October 8, 2005 a cancellation. The community itself was founded on 1 January 1991 by the merger of rural communities Hrafnagil ( Hrafnagilshreppur ) Saurbær ( Saurbæjarhreppur ) and Öngulsstaðir ( Öngulsstaðahreppur ).

As with many Icelandic communities outside the southwestern regions continue to stagnation or even decline in population growth again recorded.
