Fa'amatai

Matai is the traditional title of the head of ( chief ) of a Samoan extended family or a clan family ( aiga ) within the Matai system ( Faamatai ). For Matai men and women from the family unit can be selected. ' Matai ' means in Samoan about ' boss '.

As head of the family of Matai is responsible for all aspects of his family. He settles disputes within the family and represents them in foreign affairs. For offenses of his family but he is also liable.

Since every Samoan village consists of several extended families, the Matai represent their families in the village meetings.
