Fafe is a municipality and city ( Cidade ) in Portugal with 15,693 inhabitants (as of 30 June 2011).

History

An occupation of the site in the Castro culture and further back to around the 4th millennium BC, as evidenced by finds and excavations, such as tombs and remains of hill forts ( Portuguese: Castro). Other discoveries, such as ceramics, show the Roman past of the place. Fafe was first officially documented in the 12th century. Since the 13th century Fafe was a municipality of the district Montelongo, who won in 1513 by King Manuel I renewed administration rights ( Foral ).

Fafe later became the seat of the district of Santa Eulalia Antiga, and 1836, in the wake of the reforms of Manuel Passos, the eponym of the circle. Fafe 1840 to Vila ( town with administrative rights ), and in 1986 a town.
