Fagagna

Fagagna is a municipality in the province of Udine in Friuli, Italy with 6247 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

The municipality comprises the following five localities: Ciconicco, Villalta, San Giovanni in Colle, Battaglia and Madrisio.

History

The name Fagagna is first mentioned in 983 in that instrument, by which the Roman Emperor Otto II ( HRR ) allows the Patriarch of Aquileia, Rodoald, the castle. However, the oldest local settlements are former, as appropriate archaeological findings from pre- and prehistoric, Roman (as Fagagna inevitably station of the passage on the route from Concordia Sagittaria by Noricum is ) and high medieval periods to prove.

From the castle - which once included the Patriarch 's Palace and the Houses of vassals - have survived only the debris and a converted to a bell tower dungeon until today. In addition, the vestige and some buildings are visible on the hill, which prove the settlement of the old castle village, vast tracts wall that surrounded the fortified place and the only surviving (of three original ) castle gate. Looking at the old prayer hall of the lords of the castle, there was the Church of the Holy Archangel Michael - whose consecration points to a possible Lombard castle origin - in the year 1386 several times rebuilt, until the amendment of the nave in the 19th century, the church lost that original architectural line. which it has again in a recently restored part.
