Fagonia

Fagonia arabica

Fagonia is a plant genus of the family of Jochblattgewächse ( Zygophyllaceae ).

Description

The species of the genus Fagonia are upright growing, usually perennial, rarely annual, herbaceous plants or trees. The oppositely arranged constantly stalked, leathery leaves are composed of three sessile, more or less elliptical leaflets.

The achselbürtigen single flowers arise over the leaves and have only a short pedicel. The five sepals are non- grow, overlap each other like roof tiles ( imbricat ) and are ovate to oblong - round. The five petals are also straight up, nailed and bluish to purple. There are ten stamens. The style is edgy and not obsolete. The ovary is pyramidal, each of the five carpels with two ovules.

The fruit is a pyramid-shaped, located klappig open capsule, the seeds are mucus- forming.

Dissemination

Fagonia species are found mainly in the semi-arid to arid areas of Africa and Southeast Asia and the Americas. One type ( Fagonia cretica ) is also common in Mediterranean Europe.

Systematics and Botanical History

The genus was first described in 1753 by Carl Linnaeus, the name honors the French botanist Guy- Crescent Fagon. Type species is Fagonia cretica. The genus includes 30-40 species, some of which were first described at the turn of the millennium. Next is allied to the genus Melocarpum ..
