Fairlie, North Ayrshire

Fairlie is a village in the Scottish Unitary Authority North Ayrshire.

Geography

Fairlie is located about 23 km north- west of Irvine and 39 km southwest of Glasgow on the south coast of the Firth of Clyde. The nearest town is located few hundred meters north of Largs. The island of Great Cumbrae is approximately 2.5 km from Fairlie in the Firth of Clyde. Several small streams flow down the slopes and result in Fairlie. The three-kilometer long Fairlie Burn is the longest of them. To the north runs the Bach Kel Burn.

History

In 1581 a tower house was built near Fairlie. In the following centuries it was repeatedly extended and completed the present manor house Kelburn Castle. To the south lies the fortress of Hunterston Castle. The oldest parts of the present castle date from the 15th century at the latest. In the 16th century the family of Fairlie did Ilk built the now preserved only as ruins Fairlie Castle in Fairlie.

1601 Fairlie got the rights of a Burgh of Barony awarded. The village was only developed in the 19th century with the onset of tourism and shipbuilding. 1871, 294 people in Fairlie. Ten years later, 771 residents have already been counted. In 2001, 1510 people lived in Fairlie.

Traffic

Fairlie is directly located on the A78, which runs from Greenock to Prestwick. In June 1880, the village was connected with its own railway station on the Glasgow and Largs Branch South Western Railway in the railway network. Two years later a second station at the boat pier in which it was the terminus of the route. He has since been closed while the Fairlie station is now operated by the Ayrshire Coast Line First ScotRail. The former wharf is no longer used today. The ferry to the island of Great Cumbrae continues today at the northerly Largs.
