History
The international airport of Punta Raisi opened in 1960, because the old, located in the urban area Palermo- Boccadifalco could not cope with the volume of traffic. The consideration of interests of the Mafia led to the airport was built on a very unfavorable place, so approaching machines must pass usually relatively close to the surrounding mountains. The regular Scirocco winds forced quite soon to build a cross- wind track. In 1995, a new terminal was inaugurated with some jetways and 2001, supplemented by a rail link to the city center. A further expansion is planned.
