Fameck

Fameck is a commune with 13.082 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Moselle in the Lorraine region. It belongs to the district of Thionville -Ouest and is the capital ( chef-lieu ) of the Canton of Fameck.

Geography

Fameck is on the left side of the valley of the Moselle, about ten kilometers south-west of Thionville at an altitude 167-363 m above sea level. The municipality covers 12.45 km ². Immediately west of Fameck rises the ridge Côtes de Moselle.

History

The districts were first mentioned in the years 855-1157. The final notation was introduced in 1744. In 1789, the towns of the municipality Fameck were assembled. At the time, the place lived mainly from agriculture. After the war, 1870-1871 Fameck belonged to the German Empire.

The suburb Remelange was from 1959 a zone à urbaniser s priorité. The construction of this settlement, the population has doubled from 1960 to 1966.

Attractions

Local attractions include the Chateau de Remelange from the 16th century, restored in the 17th century. Religious buildings include the Church of Saint -Martin in Fameck from 1775, the chancel dates from the 15th century.

Economy and infrastructure

In the 19th century, the main source of Fameck changed away from agriculture through the development of the steel industry in the Valley of Fensch.
