Breakout cable refers to a special kind of adapters for electrical signals: For a multi-pin connector are less pin connectors, which are connected by a relatively short cable led out.

One reason for these adapters are often proprietary jacks which are only through the breakout cables to standard connections. The combination of several jacks to a mostly happens due to lack of space on the device.
