Fatal Racing

Fatal Racing (USA Title: Whiplash ) is a computer game of 1995, developed and distributed by Gremlin Interactive. In 1996, the game under the name Whiplash was released in the U.S. by Interplay. This is an action racing game with loops, corkscrews and jumps. It moves you with unrealistic tempo ( up to 392 km / h ) on the track, without that sense of speed transfers noticeably to the player. On many stretches tight curves can be traversed at maximum speed without having to slow down, what a lot is required, however, to exercise. Brakes you just need to wait for the car in the pits again ( even then decreed the game on a basic damage model ). The game captivates especially in multiplayer mode and a cheeky AI.

Game story

Each of the eight manufacturers of different cars has two ( with the bonus tracks, three) separate courses. The race of the championship this hostile car companies are each held on these routes. The names of these eight fictional manufacturers are:

The individual AI teams also differ in behavior during the race. While the Global team happy very aggressive opponents relegates the racing line to make up places, the DeSilva team tries to get to bonus points by destroying it like burning cars. The Million Plus team likes to drive in the wrong direction to ram oncoming cars.

It is possible during the race to give the teammate pre-programmed instructions. The "F5" key to "F8" useful therefor. For example, it is possible to command the teammate that he is to destroy enemy vehicles, or that he should concentrate on the placement and therefore must go as far as possible to the limit.

Technology & Game

The game originally ran under DOS, but was playable under Windows 95 and Windows 98. How many old DOS games it runs only limited among modern Windows versions from XP. Although the game is relatively unknown and the graphics as well as the other game features no longer able to keep up with modern arcade racing games the game includes modern approaches. For example, is the multiplayer mode for that time very sophisticated ( albeit with the now little more common network protocol IPX).

The aim of the game is to get as with all racing games with the lowest possible placement across the finish line. Depending on the degree of damage to the vehicles driving behavior is impaired and mainly reduced the speed limit. In head-to -head race usually wins the driver to slow his vehicle without damage and without maneuvering through the courses; especially at higher difficulty levels, however, this represents a huge challenge: large / high jumps, oncoming traffic areas, crossings or simply other racers damage your own vehicle, thus reducing the speed limit. In races with a high number of rounds, some last more than 30 minutes, 1 to 2 km / h speed difference may be crucial race. In addition, the destruction of enemy vehicles earns points a - a clever strategy of pit stops, turning off other vehicles and a good placement in the race is therefore needed.

In terms of its gameplay Fatal Racing Destruction Derby was with one of the pioneers for future games like Carmageddon, Crashday or FlatOut.
