Fatehgarh (Hindi: फ़तेहगढ़, Urdu: فتح گڑھ; Fatehgarh [ Fate ː hɡʌɽ ʱ ] ) is a garrison town in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh with about 15,000 inhabitants. It is the administrative seat of the district of Farrukhabad.

The city is situated on the right bank of the river Ganges near the city of Farrukhabad. The name of Fatehgarh derives from a name of an ancient fortress. The city has no major industry. However, it houses an important barracks of the Indian Army in the form of " Rajput Regiment Center". Several regiments of the Indian Army are stationed here. In the city there is also a well known temple of Lord Hanuman.

Population

At the time of the Indian census of 2001, Fatehgarh had a population of 14,682 people. Men represented 60 percent of the population. The average literacy rate was 76 percent, higher than the national average of 59.5 percent. About 83 percent of men are literate powerful. For women, the literacy rate was 65 percent. Twelve percent of the population was younger than six years.

History

During the British supremacy over the Indian subcontinent, there was a garrison in Fatehgarh. During the Indian Rebellion of 1857, the garrison was besieged and taken (see Siege of Fatehgarh ). Part of the British and Eurasian population of Fatehgarh fled to Kanpur, which was, however, also besieged. The surviving refugees - mostly women and children - were locked together with the women survivors of the massacre at Kanpur in Bibighar and murdered on July 16, 1857.
