Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim

Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim ( born 1933 in Khartoum ) is a Sudanese human rights activist and women's rights activist.

Life

Fatima Ahmed Ibrahim was born in 1933 in Khartoum, capital of Sudan. Since 1952, she became involved in the Women's Union of Sudan, and in 1954 she joined the Communist Party of Sudan. Fatima in 1965 became the first woman Member of the Sudanese Parliament.

In 1969 she married Ibrahim al - Shafi '. 1971 her husband was tortured and murdered by Abbud - military regime, while Fatima was interrogated and sentenced to two and a half years of house arrest.

In 1990, she emigrated with her son to London. In 1993 she received the UN Award for its commitment to human rights. Since the peace agreement between the central government in Khartoum and South Sudan 2005, she lives again in Sudan and is again Members of Parliament. On December 8, 2006, she was in Berlin the Ibn Rushd - Prize awarded for their dedication to women's rights, freedom of expression and social justice in Sudan.

On 19 March 2007 she resigned from all leadership positions back in the Communist Party, the Parliament and the Women's Union to give younger candidates a chance.
