Fault (technology)

As Fault ( engl.: Error ) refers to a special type of exceptional situation during execution of computer programs. Faults belonging to the so-called internal processor exceptional situations. In contrast to a " trap " Faults occur only before performing a (processor ) on operation and thus prevent the execution of the pending operation. Typically, that is in a Fault eliminates the problematic condition, and then attempted to repeat the failing operation. This is when a trap is not the case - here the execution of the operation is canceled.

Example

An important example of a fault is called the page fault (English: page fault ). The problematic condition is the access to a memory page that is not currently held in memory here. This results in the loading of the missing page, and finally to a repeated attempt to run the previously interrupted operation.
