Faverges

Faverges is a commune in the French department of Haute- Savoie department in the Rhône-Alpes region. It is the capital of the canton in the Arrondissement Annecy Faverges.

Geography

Faverges is on 507 m above sea level, about 11 km northwest of Albertville and 22 km southeast of the town of Annecy (air line). The town stretches along the southern edge of the broad Talfurche of Faverges which separates the Bornes Alps in the north of the Massif of the Wallows in the south, right on the Talwasserscheide between the catchment areas of Lake Annecy and the Isère.

The area of ​​25.86 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the Savoy Alps. The central area is occupied by the here almost 2 km wide Talfurche extending from Lac d' Annecy to Ugine after and was created by the Ice Age glaciers. Your western part is drained by the Eau Morte to Lac d' Annecy, its eastern portion of the chaise to Arly. North of the village, the ridge of the Arclosan ( southernmost section of the massif of the tour Cute ) rises steeply from the valley floor. History

The territory of Faverges was settled very early. At the site of the present hamlet Viuz, a strategically important point in a narrow part of the Talfurche of Faverges, there was the Roman settlement Casuaria, in the excavations taking place today.

Is first mentioned in the 12th century Faverges under the name fabricae. The place name comes from the Latin word fabrica ( workshop, blacksmith). Already at this time, there were along the course of the Eau Morte several forging, nail forging and tanneries. Here the iron, copper and coal deposits of the area have been processed. In the 13th century the castle was built and Faverges became the focus of a rule. The artisan now fortified town received certain liberties in the 14th century.

With industrialization, the craft activity was gradually transformed. In 1811 the castle was a weaving mill and a factory for cotton processing and set something up later, a silk factory. At the beginning of the 20th century settled with the companies ST Dupont (luxury products such as leather goods and lighter) and Stäubli ( textile and mechanical products in the area) to new major employers.

Attractions

The church in the classical style and its current form in the 19th century. In the Gothic Revival style, the Chapel of the Annunciation was built. In Viuz the church of Saint -Jean -Baptiste, originally dating back to the 12th century and belonged to a priory stands. The Romanesque nave was enlarged in 1827 and increased the bell tower in the 19th century. Excavations here the foundations of an early Christian church have been found dating from the 6th century. On a hill above the town Faverges stands the castle, whose emblem is the round keep from the 13th century. The present castle building are largely taken from the 17th century.

The Archaeological Museum of Viuz- Faverges shows numerous items that were funded during the excavations of Casuaria revealed and other finds from the Neolithic period and Burgundian. In the Castle of Faverges there is a butterfly museum. Among the natural attractions include the waterfall of the river Saint- Ruph and an adjacent cave.

Population

With 6964 inhabitants ( 1 January 2011) Faverges one of the larger towns in the Haute-Savoie region. During the 20th century the population grew steadily, with particularly high growth rates were recorded during the 1970s. Since the mid- 80s only small fluctuations were registered.

With the community Bühlertal in Germany Faverges maintains since 1990 a partnership and another with the community Horgen in Switzerland.

Economy and infrastructure

Since ancient times, the life in Faverges was dominated by trade and industry. Today Faverges is an important industrial center. Among the important industries include precision mechanical industry, furnace and Kitchen cabinets, metal and transport industry. An industrial zone developed in the valley north of the town, on both sides of the railway line.

The village has a good infrastructure. It lies on the main road N508 that runs from Annecy to Albertville. Today Faverges is relieved by a local bypass from through traffic. Other regional road links exist with Thones and over the Col de Tamié with Frontenex. The nearest links to the A430 motorway is located at a distance of around 23 km. 1901 Faverges was connected to the French railroad network. The line from Albertville to Doussard is now closed for passenger traffic, however.
