Faversham Abbey

The monastery was founded by King Stephen and Queen Matilda from the year 1147. A group of monks from Bermondsey Abbey was at the core of the Abbey and introduced the first abbot

In 1538 the monastery was closed in the wake of the monastery resolutions by King Henry VIII and demolished for the most part. A large part of the construction material was loaded onto ships to France and served to secure the site in the vicinity of Calais.

The abbey is the burial place of King Stephen, Queen Mathilda and her son Eustace IV of Boulogne ( † 1153 ).
