FAW Premier Cup

The FAW Premier Cup (formerly the FAW Invitation Cup) was a Welsh football competition, which was from 1997 to 2008, held annually by the Football Association of Wales, the Welsh Football Association. After 1996, the six playing in English leagues Welsh clubs from the Welsh Cup were excluded, the FAW decided to start a new competition to find the really best Welsh team.

Participant

It was originally planned that Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham AFC from the English League System played together with the also playing in England Merthyr Tydfil FC and four clubs from the League of Wales. By 2001 /02 Merthyr Tydfil had a safe starting place, because the gambling in England AFC Newport County and Colwyn Bay FC were not invited. Subsequently, it was decided that these three clubs ( Newport, Merthyr and Colwyn Bay) of each best-placed on allowed FAW Premier Cup participate.

From the 2004/05 season the competition was expanded from eight to 16 teams. Entrants must be henceforth the ten best clubs in the League of Wales, the top two clubs in Newport County, Merthyr Tydfil and Colwyn Bay as well as the winners of the Welsh Cup, and finally the three antretenden top clubs in England Wales Cardiff City, Swansea City AFC Wrexham.

Comments

For Welsh football ratios of the Premier Cup offered a good side income for the participating clubs. In the season 2006/ 07, the loser of the semi-finals were at least £ 25,000, the final participant and the winner £ 50,000 £ 100,000.

The top clubs, but especially Cardiff City, were faced with allegations, not to compete with the best teams and only half-heartedly. For the other participants, however, the competition has a high priority because it is the only way to compete with the Welsh top clubs from the English leagues pyramid. Despite the success in the second English League Cardiff won the Cup only in 2002 against arch-rivals Swansea City.

Successful team is Wrexham. The club always reached the cup final, with three exceptions. The losing teams of the League of Wales played in the finals so far hardly any role. Barry Town, Rhyl, The New Saints and Llanelli held this as the only finalists so far. Only in 2007 was not playing in England Senior team to the final.

The FAW Premier Cup was broadcast on BBC Wales. After the transmitter 2008 its support ended, the competition has been set.
