Fayuan Temple

The Fayuan Temple or the Fayuan Monastery (Chinese法源寺, Pinyin Fayuan si, English Fayuan Temple / Monastery Fayuan ) in the southern city of Xuanwu District, the historic center of Beijing is an ancient Buddhist monastery. The monastery is since 1956 the seat of the Chinese Buddhist Academy ( Zhongguo Foxueyuan ), the highest Buddhist Academy in the country.

The Fayuan Temple was built in 645 during the Tang Dynasty, making it the oldest existing temple of Beijing. He had several names throughout its history. After several interim renovations most buildings today's temple complex date from the Ming and Qing dynasties.

The Fayuan Temple is on the list of monuments of the People's Republic of China ( 5-201 ) since 2001.

He is one of the National Chinese Buddhism temple of focus on Han Chinese territory.
