Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry

Fazal Ilahi Chaudhry ( Urdu فضل الہی چوہدری; * January 1, 1904 in the province of Gujarat, British India, † June 2, 1982 in Lahore, Pakistan) was a Pakistani politician and President of Pakistan's 1973 until 1978.

Life

Fazal studied politics at the Aligarh Muslim University and law at the University of the Punjab. After graduating in 1927 he went back to Gujarat, where he practiced law and worked as a local politician. In 1942, he joined the Muslim League. In 1945 he was elected chairman of the League for Gujarat. After independence he was temporarily education and health ministers. In 1956 he was elected to the National Assembly and was its spokesman until 1958. Muhammad Ayub Khan Under the government he joined the Convention Muslim League game. After the elections of 1962 he became deputy leader of the opposition. In 1970 he was selected for the Pakistan People's Party in parliament and in 1972 Speaker of Parliament.

After the adoption of the Constitution of 1973, he was elected for a five -year term as president. His duties were mainly representative, the real power lay with the former President Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, who took over the premiership. Fazals position remained unchanged after the military coup of 1977, after completion of his tenure, he was replaced in September 1978 by Zia ul- Haq.
