Fazıl Küçük

Fazıl Küçük (* 1906 in Nicosia, † January 15, 1984 in London) was Vice President of the Republic of Cyprus.

Life

Fazıl Küçük, the son of a farmer, was born in Nicosia in 1906. Küçük studied medicine at the Universities of Istanbul, Lausanne and Paris. After returning to Cyprus in 1937 he opened a practice, because of his interest in politics, he stood up for the rights of the Turkish Cypriots. In 1941 Küçük Halkin Sesi newspaper founded ( Voice of the people ) and became the editorial director. Because of its campaign against the British colonial administration, received his newspaper until 1942 no permission for publication.

In 1943 he was one of the founders of the Kıbrıs Adası; Türk Kurumu Azınlık (Association of the Turkish minority on the island of Cyprus - Katak ). The aim of the party was to promote the social, economic and political welfare of the Turkish Cypriots. Due to disagreements with some members Küçük left the Katak and established the Kıbrıs Türk Milli Birlik Partisi ( Turkish Cypriot National Unity Party ). After 15 years of dispute to Küçük sat for the transfer of Evkaf ( a Turkish religious funds) from England to Cyprus one.

While the Zurich and London Agreement for the establishment of an independent Republic of Cyprus, Küçük represented the Turkish Cypriots and was to secure constitutional guarantees for the citizens in the area. On December 3, 1959 Küçük was elected as vice president of the new republic. After trying the Greek Cypriots, to amend the constitution (Cyprus conflict ), Küçük was continued until 1973 served as Vice President of the Republic of Cyprus. Despite illness Küçük continued to support the Turkish Cypriots with his newspaper.

Küçük died in Westminster Hospital on January 15, 1984 exactly two months after the Unilateral Declaration of Independence of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.
