FC Oțelul Galați

FC Oţelul Galaţi is a Romanian football club based in Galaţi. The name of the association is derived from the Romanian word Otel ( " steel "). He plays since 1991 in the first Romanian football league.

History

Oţelul Galaţi was founded in 1964. For the first time in 1986, the club went into the first Romanian League, the Divizia A, on. In 1988 he qualified in fourth place for the first time for the UEFA Cup and was able to achieve a 1-0 win over Juventus there. In this game, also the current attendance record the club's history was achieved with 35,000 spectators.

After two fourth places in the years 1996/97 and 1997/98 took Oţelul under coach Costel Orac at the end of the 2002/ 03 only rank 13 and had in the relegation matches against FC Oradea, the representative from the Divizia B compete. Although penetrated the enemy, Oţelul was allowed to remain top notch, as the two local rivals Astra Ploieşti and FC Petrolul Ploiesti merged in the summer of 2003 and thereby a place in the upper house was free. A year later, the club reached the final of the Cupa României 2003/ 04, which went against Dinamo Bucharest lost with 0:2.

On 27 December 2005 were committed with Petre Grigoraş a new coach. Grigoraş had terminated his contract with Farul Constanta during the first round of 2005/ 06, replacing interim coach Gigi Ion, who took over this role in November 2005 after the cancellation of Aurel Şunda. In early July 2009 Grigoraş left the club in the direction of Politehnica Iaşi and was replaced by Dorinel Munteanu.

In the season 2010/11 Oţelul Galaţi was for the first time in the club's history of Romanian champions and thus qualified directly for the group stage of the UEFA Champions League. There, they were separated after the first round after losing six as a group from Last. In July 2011 Oţelul won the Romanian Supercup with a 1-0 win over Steaua Bucharest.
