Fecal Matter (band)

Fecal Matter (English, faeces ') was an early band of Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain, which also included members of the Melvins.

History

The band was formed in the winter of 1985 and consisted initially of Kurt Cobain (guitar, vocals), Dale Crover (bass) and Greg Hokanson (drums). Hokanson left the band but soon again. In 1986, the lineup again with Mike Dillard (drums) and Buzz Osborne (bass ) before Cobain broke up the band. Cobain had with Fecal Matter least one live performance in December 1985 at the Spot Club, Moclips, Washington with Hokanson and Crover.

Cobain and Crover took on at Cobain's aunt Mari Earl, which had a four-track recorder, a demo with 15 songs in December 1985. Crover played in these recordings besides the bass guitar also the drums. Cobain presented the recordings in his circle of friends around, and it was this demo, (particularly the song Spank Thru ), which brought the future Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic to form a band with Cobain.

The Fecal Matter demo tape, of which hitherto no copy open to the public, is considered in Nirvana fan circles as one of the most coveted in the unpublished Cobain recordings. Originally, Mike Broomfield's documentary Kurt & Courtney cuttings of this demo include, but Cobain's widow Courtney Love legally allowed this to not know what is noted in the film.

In 2004 appeared the Nirvana box set With the Lights Out booklet a picture of the cover of the Fecal Matter demo tapes can be seen, which reveals the actual name of the demo, Illiteracy will prevail and the track list.

On the published on 31 October 2005 Nirvana CD Sliver: The Best of the Box one of the Fecal Matter song has now been officially released yet. The song is Spank Thru, which of Kurt Cobain was also taken up in his later band Nirvana again.

At least two other songs on the demo recording also became Nirvana songs, including Downer and Anorexorcist whose main riff part of the Fecal Matter 's songs.

In March 2006, a few more songs from the Fecal Matter demo was made available for fans across a randomly found website. For most, although it is only to song fragments, which were probably taken from a microphone from a stereo, but three songs made available from a direct copy now. The authenticity has been confirmed. The three songs are Sound Of Dentage, Bambi Slaughter and Laminated Effect.
