Federico Gonzaga (cardinal)

Federico Gonzaga (* 1540 in Mantua, † February 21, 1565 in Rome ) was the son of the Duke Federico II Gonzaga of Mantua and Cardinal since 1563.

His mother was Marghareta of Montferrat (* August 11, 1510, † December 28, 1556 ), the daughter of Margrave Wilhelm XI. Federico studied at the University of Bologna.

Pope Pius IV raised him in the Consistory of January 6, 1563 cardinal with the title of Santa Maria Nuova. As the successor of his uncle Ercole Gonzaga of Mantua Federico was 1563 Bishop and his cousin Francesco II Gonzaga was his successor in office.

After his death, Federico was buried in the Cathedral of Saints Peter and Paul in Mantua.
