Fedra (Mayr)

Fedra Greek Φαίδρα, ( the Radiant ), standard German spelling Phaedra, is an opera in two acts in Italian, which was composed in 1820 by the Bavarian composer Johann Simon Mayr. It is the penultimate opera composition of Mayr. The Libertto comes from Luigi Romanelli. The opera was premiered at La Scala in Milan on December 26, 1820.

Content

The content comes from the Greek mythology. It is the story of the royal couple Phaedra and Theseus. His son from his first marriage Hippolytus is coveted by Fedra. Hippolytus, but is secretly in love and forgive in Aricia. This takes the drama of its course, and the servant of Fedra, Fedra itself and Hippolytus to die.

Reenactments

On 30 March 2008, the German premiere of the opera took place at the Staatstheater Braunschweig, ie 188 years after the first performance. The title role in Braunschweig sang Capucine Chiaudani, soprano Rebecca Nelsen, tenor Tomasz Zagorsk, directed by Kerstin Maria Pöhlers.
