Félix Pons

Félix Pons ( born September 14, 1942 in Palma de Mallorca, † July 2, 2010 ) was a Spanish lawyer and politician of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español ( PSOE).

Biography

After school he graduated in law and worked after admission as a lawyer. His father, an opponent of the regime of Francisco Franco, already went into exile.

After his return Pons joined in 1974 shortly before the transition ( Transición ) of the Partido Socialista Obrero Español ( PSOE) as a member.

In July 1985 he was appointed by Prime Minister Felipe González to the Minister for Territorial Administration ( Ministro de Administración territorial ) in his cabinet. Successor as minister was on July 26, 1986 Joaquín Almunia.

After the success of the PSOE in elections to the Parliament ( Cortes Generales ) of 22 June 1986 in which the party got 44.1% of the vote and won 184 seats in parliament, pons ( Congreso de los Deputies ) itself became the President of the Chamber of Deputies elected. This post he held for ten years until the election defeat of the PSOE in the general elections of 1996.

Then he withdrew from politics and was, until his death from a pancreatic tumor in turn worked as a lawyer in Palma de Mallorca. In addition, he accepted an appointment as professor of commercial law at the University of the Balearic Islands.

For his achievements he has won both the Grand Cross of the Order of Charles III. the gold medal of the autonomous communities of Balearic Islands ( Medalla de Oro de la Comunidad Autónoma de Baleares).
