Fenarimol is a chemical compound selected from the group of pyrimidines (specifically Pyrimidincarbinole ). It is used as a fungicide (eg against rusts, blackspot and powdery mildews ) in ornamentals and turf, but also with peppers, tomatoes and cucumbers and marketed under the trade name Rubigan. The approval of fenarimol in the EU has so far been given only limited ( currently until the end of 2009). The effect is based on the inhibition of enzymes, such as C14-demethylase.
History
Fenarimol was placed in 1975 by Eli Lilly on the market.
Chemistry and isomerism
Fenarimol contains a stereocenter, it is chiral. It is a racemate [ 1:1 mixture of (S) - and (R )-enantiomer ] used.
Safety
For fenarimol has been demonstrated that it can activate estrogen receptors and thus lead to increased growth of MCF7 breast cancer cells. It is toxic to fish and therefore must not be discharged to any waterway.
