Fender (boating)

A Fender is a protection body, the damage to the hull of a ship in harbor maneuvers and is lying on the quay or in the packet prevent (ship to ship).

The Fender is thereby positioned between ship and quay or wharf or between two ships that it serves both as a shock absorber and on the other hand as a spacer so that the hull does not chafe. As Fender for large ships, for example, old car tires, braided rope or wooden beams are used. The latter found primarily in inland waterway transport use and extensively washed before each use to avoid a noisy " creaking " on motion of the ship, so that the wood remains elastic. Dried Reibhölzer easily shatter under hard pressure.

Of these fenders are also extremely large versions of the size of a small submarine, ( some with their own drive ) take all then between a supertanker and a smaller lighter- tankers for distance when the supertanker invest because of his draft, not directly on the land can and must be lightened at anchor.

Use on yachts

Spherical or barrel-shaped, filled with compressed air plastic bodies are used on motor or sailing yachts in general. In lateral positioning the Fender be fixed at sailing yachts at the railing. When mounting the node Rundtörn with two half hitches, or plugged Webeleinenstek are mostly used to slip. It applies to yachts as indelicate to hang Fender outboard while driving.

The Fenderbrett expands the possibility of fenders, for example, when applied to piles.

Fender as part of the quays

For larger ships used independently founded Fender, which are part of the quays. On tubular piles to wood (to protect the ship surface ) finished plates are mounted. For example, put oil tanker to a tanker discharge crane as in Wilhelmshaven not directly to a quay on, but on a pair of large fenders that protrude a short distance in front of the dock out of the water. They are designed to be elastic ( and which distinguishes them from dolphins ) so that they can join the ship's movements when creating and swell to a certain degree.
