Ferdynand Ruszczyc

Ferdynand Ruszczyc ( born December 10, 1870 in Bohdanów, † October 30, 1936 ibid ) was a Polish painter and graphic symbolism.

Ruszczyc studied from 1890 law at the University of Saint Petersburg. From 1892 to 1897 he trained as a painter at the Academy of Fine Arts with Ivan Ivanovich Shishkin and Archip Ivanovich Kuindzhi. For holidays in Crimea, Rügen, Bornholm and in southern Sweden, he found subjects for his paintings. On a trip to Europe in 1898, he attended among others Berlin, Cologne, Paris, Brussels, Basel, Milan, Venice and Vienna.

1899, 1901 and 1901, he participated in group exhibitions of the journal Mir Isskustwa. Since 1900 he was a member of the Polish artist union Sztuka, with whom he regularly exhibited. Also in the exhibitions former graduates of the St. Petersburg Academy of Arts ( 1900 ) and the Warsaw Towarzystwo Zachęty Sztuk Pieknych (Society for the Encouragement of Arts, 1904-07 ), he took part regularly.

With Kazimierz Stabrowski, Xawery Dunikovski, Konrad Krzyżanowski and Karol Tichy, he founded the School of Fine Arts Warsaw, where he taught. In the academic year 1907-1908, he held the chair of landscape painting at the Cracow Academy of Fine Arts.

In 1908 he organized with Józef Mehoffer an exhibition of Polish painting in Vienna. He then settled in Vilnius. Here he devoted himself to teaching, organized cultural events and worked as a graphic designer, poster designer and illustrator. As a costume designer, he participated in several performances of the municipal theater, and he was a member of the Committee for the Preservation of the Adam Mickiewicz monument of the city. 1918-19 he participated in the founding of the Faculty of Fine Arts at the Stephan Batory University, the first of which he became dean.
