Ferguson Jenkins

Ferguson " Fergie " Arthur Jenkins ( born December 13, 1942 in Chatham, Ontario, Canada ) is a retired Canadian professional baseball player in Major League Baseball. His nickname was Fly.

Biography

Jenkins was hired by the Philadelphia Phillies in the draft in 1963. His debut in the National League right-handed pitcher was the September 10, 1965. Early as next year, he was transferred from the Phillies to the Chicago Cubs, where he spent his best years in baseball.

From 1967 to 1972 Jenkins won at least 20 games in the Cubs jersey every season. In 1971, he reached an ERA of 2.77, won 24 games in 13 defeats, completed 30 complete games and won the Cy Young Award in the National League. In 1967 and 1971 he also took part in the All- Star game and had to give up a home run every time. After 1973 no more 20 games won, he was transferred from the Cubs to the Texas Rangers. In his first year in Texas, he won 25 games, this was the last season in which he was able to exceed this mark. He was this year the first baseball player to win the Lou Marsh Trophy for the best Canadian athletes.

According to the Rangers, he moved even to the Boston Red Sox, and from there again to the Rangers and the Cubs. His last game in the National League, he played on 26 September 1983. He finished his career with 284 wins and 3192 strikeouts. In 1987, he was inducted into the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame and was elected in 1991 as the first Canadian in the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown.
