Ferguson Lake (Kivalliq Region)

The Ferguson Lake is a lake in the Kivalliq region in Nunavut ( Canada).

The lake is located about 150 km north of the tree line, halfway between Yathkyed Lake and Lake Qamanirjuaq. The Ferguson River drains the Ferguson Lake on its eastern shore and flows for 210 km eastern Hudson Bay. Baker Lake, the nearest settlement located 160 km north of the Ferguson Lake.

The lake was discovered by the Geological Survey of Canada, the Arctic explorer Joseph Tyrrell, a canoe expedition in 1894. Participants of this expedition was Robert Monro Ferguson, a Scottish athlete and aide- de-camp of Lord Aberdeen, Governor General of Canada.

According to Ferguson, the lake and its outflow was named.

Geography

The Ferguson Lake has an irregular contour, with many deep bays, headlands long, grassy shore slopes, terraces of sand and gravel, rocky and narrow.

There are several rocky islands in the lake. These consist of gray-colored gneisses and diorite dunkelgrünfarbenem. On a larger island, there is a 1 km long runway.

To the east of the lake is a 180 m high striking elevation, the Uligattalik Hill at ( 62 ° 55 ' 38.3 "N, 96 ° 33' 54.6 " W62.927306 - 96.565154 )

The Ferguson Lake is located in the northern Hearne domain, in the western Churchill province of the Churchill craton, the northwestern part of the Canadian Shield.

Flora

Dwarf Birch (Betula nana ), Labrador tea, lichen and mosses make up the majority of the vegetation along the lake shore.

Fauna

The cold air and the Under -saturated Barrenlands terrain constitute the habitat of barren-ground caribou, grizzly bear, musk ox, arctic hare and arctic fox.

Mineral resources

1953 copper - nickel deposits were discovered in the area of the Ferguson Lake. A further exploration took place in 1987 cobalt, palladium and platinum.

Starfield Resources 1999 led by at least four holes to explore an anomaly.

2004 began more commercial drilling on the east side of the lake. These are part of a large-scale project, under which sulfides, nickel, copper, cobalt, platinum and palladium are to be promoted.
