Life and work

Fernando Botero is one of the most famous visual artists in Latin America. He was born in 1932 as son of a person living in modest circumstances in the Andes family. The young Fernando Botero began at the age of 12 years to paint, while still in secondary school. He earned his living as a designer and illustrator quickly. At age 16, he took 1948 for the first time at an exhibition of painters in Medellín part. In 1951 he moved to Bogotá, because life was culturally rich there, and shortly afterwards to Europe.

In the late 50s he has found his own, now famous style. His subject is man, the human life with all its facets. The illustration of FIG experienced a particular expression in his work, because it shows the human body, like all other forms in exaggerated proportions. The art of Botero has a very special characteristic. All his characters are thick - very thick. In his aesthetics fat people are beautiful. Thus his pictures depict fat people: kings, soldiers, but also dancers and bullfighters that you would rather associate with thin figures. In 1977 he created, for example, a variation of Leonardo da Vinci's Mona Lisa with ball-shaped face. In this way he increases the sensual presence, a figure which is from this formative design feature of Botero. Like no other artist Botero has dealt intensively with the history of art and tradition - by Piero della Francesca about Rubens to Picasso. He explores how these painters before him, the room and the presence of mold. Botero's paintings live from the voltage developed by the contrast between the lushness of the human figure and the simultaneous reduction of the details.

After first sculptural works in the early 60ies, Botero from 1976 onwards more and more of the sculpture. Again, the important issues for him, see: the sensuous forms, dealing with volume and technical perfection.

How Astor Piazzolla in music or Gabriel García Márquez in the literature he represents like no other the image of Latin American cultures. Botero describes himself as the kolumbianischsten all Colombian painter. His grotesquely naive figures with bloated bodies he sees as symbols of a degenerate colonial bourgeoisie.

In 1998, a variety of sculptures throughout the city were issued in Bamberg as part of the Sculpture Trail. Following the presentation, the city acquired with the help of numerous donors, the lying fruit. In 2006 he made his paintings on the torture scandal at Abu Ghraib prison for attention.

In autumn 2007, works by Botero in Berlin Lustgarten in Berlin and the Brandenburg Gate were seen.

" Botero - Born in Medellin" At the conclusion of the 26th International Film Festival Munich the documentary was premiered 28 June 2008 in the presence of the artist and the German director Peter Schamoni. The film tells the life story and the career Botero.
