Fernando Leal (artist)

Fernando Leal ( born February 26, 1896 in Mexico City; † October 7, 1964 in Mexico City) was a Mexican painter and sculptor. He is the co-founder of the Mexican muralist movement of the 20s.

Biography

He completed his studies at the open-air painting school of Coyoacan under Alfredo Ramos Martínez, together with Gabriel Fernández Ledesma, Rafael Vera de Córdoba, Ramón Alva de la Canal and Fermín Revueltas Sánchez. He then taught at the Academia de San Carlos in 1927 and got the job as director of the Centro Popular de Pintura in Nonoalco. Leal was a founding member of the revolutionary painter " 30-30 ", the theorist and the author of manifestos he was. With its encaustic " La fiesta del Señor de Chalma " (1922-1923) he determined the theme and style of the muralistischen movement. This work is in the Escuela Nacional Preparatoria, where Diego Rivera, Jean Charlot, José Clemente Orozco, Ramón Alva de la Canal and David Alfaro Siqueiros worked.

On November 16, 1958, his son Fernando Leal Audirac was born, who is also one of the most famous artists of Mexico. A year later, Leal started a campaign for artist rights. His book on the Academia de San Carlos remained unfinished. 1983 filmed his nephew Javier Audirac the life and work of Fernando Leal.
