Fernando Mamede

Fernando Eugenio Pacheco Mamede ( born 1 November 1951 in Beja ) is a former Portuguese long-distance runner, who set a world record and two other European records in the 10,000 -meter run.

Career

Mamede won his first Portuguese league title in 1969 with the 4 x 400 - meter relay team of Sporting Clube de Portugal. In June 1971, Mamede about 800 meters on the first of his total of 18 Portuguese Olympic records on individual routes. In August 1971, he improved his 800 -meter record in the flow at the European Championships in Helsinki on 1:48,4 min, but dropped out anyway. At the Olympic Games in Munich in 1972, he joined the 800 meters, 1500 meters and the 4 x 400 - meter relay, but different in each case in the first round. At the European Championships 1974 in Rome Mamede improved in the 800 -meter lead once more the Portuguese national record and reached the second round. In 1976 Mamede with national record in the semi-final lead over 1500 meters at the Olympic Games in Montreal.

From 1977 started Mamede mainly on the longer routes. So he reached at the European Championships 1978 in Prague the final over 5000 meters, there came but only to the fifteenth place. In 1981, Mamede at the World Cross Country Championships in 1981 with its first international medal bronze, three years later, he won the Portuguese team also bronze. On 30 May 1981, Mamede, Lisbon with 27:27,7 min his first European record. On July 9, 1982 improved Mamede this record in Paris 27:22,95 min. At the World Championships 1983 in Helsinki Mamede won the first heat in 27:45,54 min. The final two days later proved to be much slower in the sprint finals Mamede could not keep up and finished at the end of the 14th Place. On July 2, 1984 in Stockholm Mamede improved again its 10,000 - meter time, undercutting in 27:13,81 min the world record of Henry Rono, where also the runner-up, compatriot Carlos Lopes Mamedes, remained under the old world record. At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles Lopes won the marathon and was the first Portuguese Olympic champion; Mamede qualified in the 10,000 meters as the first of its forward travel for the final, but were there on.

In the following years Mamede occurred internationally only at Cross World Championships in appearance, in his last start in 1989 in Stavanger, he came as a 43 finish, finishing with the Portuguese team to seventh place. In August 1989, the Mexican Arturo Barrios Mamede took over from the world record holder in the 10,000 meters.
