Fernando Sabino

Fernando Tavares Sabino ( born October 12, 1923 in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais, † 11 October 2004 in Rio de Janeiro ) was a Brazilian writer and journalist.

Life

During his youth, Sabino was a radio announcer and began with articles and stories on a regular basis to the journals of his hometown Belo Horizonte contribute. He won several prizes in competitions.

At the beginning he 1940s he began to study law. He began his career in journalism at the same time as an editor at the newspaper Folha de Minas. His first collection of short stories, Os Grilos não Cantam corn ( The crickets sing no more ) was published in Rio de Janeiro in 1941.

Later, he joined the staff of the newspaper Correio da Manhã, where he met Vinicius de Moraes and became friends with him.

In 1944, Sabino moved to Rio de Janeiro. After completing his studies in law at the Federal University of Rio, he moved in 1946 for two years with Vinicius de Moraes to New York.

One of his most famous works, O Encontro Marcado, was published in 1956. It was also published abroad and adapted as a theater piece. In 1957, Sabino decided to just be more active as a writer and journalist. He began daily reports for the newspaper Jornal do Brasil and monthly reports to write for the magazine Senhor. In 1960 came out O Homem Nu ( The Naked Man ), a collection of short stories Sabinos; The publisher Editora do author had been founded by Sabino, Rubem Braga and Walter Acosta. In 1962 followed A Mulher do Vizinho ( The wife of the neighbors ), which was awarded the Prize of the Cinaglia Pen Club do Brasil.

In 1966, Sabino reported by the football World Cup for the Jornal do Brasil. In 1967 he founded together with Rubem Braga the publisher Editora Sabiá. While this existed only five years, but there were among others Books by Vinicius de Moraes, Paulo Mendes Campos, Otto Lara Resende, Carlos Drummond de Andrade, Manuel Bandeira, Cecília Meireles and Clarice Lispector published.

In 1979, the novel O Grande Mentecapto was released, which began a series of 30 additional plants. For this work was of the Prêmio Jabuti and it was years later adapted for the cinema and theater. In July 1999 he Prêmio Machado de Assis of the Academia Brasileira de Letras was awarded for his life's work.

In 2004, Sabino died at his home in Ipanema (Rio de Janeiro) after a long illness, one day before his 81st birthday. His works are among the most widely read in Brazilian schools.
