Ferrante Gonzaga

Ferrante I Gonzaga ( born January 28, 1507 Mantua, † November 15, 1557 in Brussels ) from the family Gonzaga was the third son of the Marquis Gianfrancesco II Gonzaga of Mantua and Isabella d' Este.

He made a military career, during which he rose to the commander of the Emperor Charles V., and was appointed in 1536 by this viceroy of Sicily. This office he gave in 1546 to the benefit of the governorship of Milan, which he held until 1555. Under the name Príncipe de Molfetta 1543 he was ambassador of Charles V at Henry VIII of England.

Ferrante Gonzaga bought In 1539, the county of Guastalla. He had married in 1529 Isabella of Capua († September 17, 1559 ), the daughter of Prince Ferdinand of Molfetta. With her he had several children, among them Francesco II Gonzaga, Giovanni Vincenzo Gonzaga and Cesare I. Gonzaga, who was appointed Duke of Amalfi.
