Fetch (geography)

As Fetch (also cowl length or Wirkweg ) is called the length of the initial section of a wind over a water surface.

Performs the initial section of the wind over water ( lake or sea ), the wind at larger Wirkweg thus produces a correspondingly higher (and longer ) water wave. Therefore, the waves generally are higher than on the leeward side to the windward side of an island.
