Fibromuscular dysplasia

The Fibromuscular dysplasia (FMD ) is a disease that is defined by non-inflammatory connective tissue and proliferation of smooth muscle in the walls of arteries. It occurs mostly in young women. The cause is not known.

The fibromuscular dysplasia may be accompanied by all the symptoms of vascular bed constrictions. Commonly affected vessels are renal artery ( renal artery ) (leads to high blood pressure) and internal carotid artery ( carotid artery ) (leading to neurological symptoms).

Diagnosis falls in the digital subtraction angiography on a beaded stenosis. The definitive diagnosis is made by histological detection in a sample by biopsy. No specific therapy does not exist.
