Fichtenohe

The Fichtenohe north of Pegnitz

The longer and considerably richer water Fichtenohe ( back right) " flows " into the Pegnitz ( smaller waterfall on the left) from the Pegnitz source

The Fichtenohe is a 22.59 km long left tributary of the river Pegnitz in Upper Franconia. Some call the Fichtenohe only as a secondary name in the upper reaches of the river Pegnitz.

Name

The name Fichtenohe was created by the dense spruce forest in the region. The additional height means flowing water; see Ache.

Geography

Course

It rises in the Lindenhardt forest near the Rotmainquelle and the origin of Püttlach, north of Lindenhardt near the A 9 from there flows towards south Fichtenohe reached a little above the town Pegnitz the valley of the Zipser Millstream. At its mouth it changes its flow direction to the west, then bends south again and in Pegnitz the Fichtenohe divides into two branches:

  • The right river flows past the pool and wraps around the historic city center in an arc to the west. After about a kilometer, is amplified below the castle hill of about 100 meters long and much smaller stream from the Pegnitz source and is called from there to the river Pegnitz.
  • The left arm part, which is also called Mühlbach, flows through parts of the old town and crosses under 900 m in a culvert, the crossing from the right and west Pegnitz - so the earlier right arm. The Mühlbach then bends off to the southeast and follows the river Pegnitz in the parallel operation. At the Rösch mill, a large part of the water of the river Pegnitz Mühlbach is supplied, the rest disappears into the so-called water mountain. While the Pegnitz these flows around in a 1.8 -km-long eastern loop in about 15 minutes, the underground flow of Fichtenohe at 320 m distance takes about 180 minutes. Immediately after the re- emergence of the residual Fichtenohe it opens from the right in the Pegnitz.
