Field's metal
Field 's metal is a near-eutectic alloy which melts at about 62 ° C. It is named after Simon Field sources.
Composition
Field 's metal consists of indium, bismuth and tin with the following mass fractions:
- 51% indium (In)
- 32.5 % bismuth ( Bi)
- 16.5 % tin (Sn )
The approximate ratio formula would thus be 3 in Bi 2 1 Sn.
Use
Field 's metal is suitable for example as cast metal. Since it wets glass in a liquid state, it can also be used as a solder glass.
In general, it can be used as non-toxic replacement for the cadmium, used Wood's metal melting at about 73-77 ° C. A drawback here is the price, which is quite high due to the content of indium.
