Field hockey at the 2004 Summer Olympics

The hockey tournaments of the 2004 Summer Olympics were held until 27 August 2004 at Helliniko Olympic Complex of 14.

Hockey was at the Olympic Games 1908 in London in the program since 1928 without interruption for the first time. The competition of the ladies was added in 1980.

Both German ladies as well as the Australian men won in these games for the first time gold.

Gentlemen

Australia became the first Olympic champion in hockey. It defeated the Netherlands 2-1 in the final in extra time. The Golden Goal scored Jamie Dwyer. The German team won the 3rd place match against Spain 4-3 after extra time also. The Golden Goal scored Bjorn Michel in the 80th minute.

Tournament mode

The men played like in Sydney in 2000, first in two groups of six A and B. Then the rankings in the knock-out system were determined. The First and Second the group played the semifinals and then cross over to the medals. The Third and Fourth of the groups played for places five to eight, the Fifth and Sixth for places nine to twelve.

The Olympic hockey tournament 2004 was surprisingly won by the German team against the favored team from the Netherlands. With two goals in the first half Germany went with 2-0 (goal scorers Anke Kühn, Franziska Gude ). The Netherlands succeeded in the 2nd half after a penalty corner still the 1:2 goal back by Maartje Scheepstra. The compensation, which would have meant an extension, but could not remember. With the title written in Germany hockey ladies at the same time sports history, because the victory was won by a German women's team for the first time a gold medal at an Olympic hockey tournament. At the Olympic Games of Barcelona in 1992 Germany was subject to the final and Spain won the silver medal.
