Fiji ( Fiji also written ) belongs to the Malayo - Polynesian language family, a subgroup of the Austronesian languages , which are spread across the entire Pacific region. Within this group of languages Fiji is more closely related to the Polynesian languages and some spoken languages in the Solomon Islands.
340 000 people speak Fijian as their mother tongue, slightly less than half the population of Fiji, but it is used by about 320 000 as a second language. The 1997 Constitution established Fijian put together with English and Hindustani as an official language of Fiji. There are discussions about introducing Fijian as a " national language", with English and Hindustani but should continue to be the official languages.
