The Fil de Casson ( German Cassonsgrat ) is a summit of the Glarus Alps in the canton of Graubünden in Switzerland without a distinctive peak structure. Fil is in the Romance language of a burr on the ridge forms the northern end of the Flims stone. It covers a total of about 2.4 kilometers from the Fuorcia Raschaglius at 2600 meters above the highest point "Il Fil " at 2694 meters to almost a kilometer further east the Mutta Bella at 2644 meters. South of it lies above a distinctive notch the Mutta Bella at an altitude of 2473 m.

In the western part you stand on the south -facing scar of the sliding surface of the Flims landslide, in the eastern part of the plateau and on the alp of the Flims stone. Towards the south, offers a free and comprehensive panorama from the Ortler over the Engadine Mountains to the cathedral in the Valais and the Finstaarhorn. To the north of the ridge breaks off abruptly into Bargistal. Behind it are to the northeast of the highest mountain in the canton of St. Gallen, the Ringelspitz to see and Piz Dolf and to the northwest of the Piz Segnas and Tschingelhörner with the distinctive line of the Glarus overthrust. This thrust is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the feet Fil de Cassons literally.

Access

The ridge is located north of Flims in the Anterior Rhine Valley from where he is tapped with a small cable car. The Cassonsbahn is operated until 2015 by the Weisse Arena Group.

The interesting rock-hewn Alpweg of Bargis forth on the nightmare on the Flimserstein also leads up to the ridge Another route is through the Bargis Valley and below the south flank of Piz Dolf through from the West to get out of the Camona da Segnas ( Segneshütte ) 2,102 m above sea level. M. on the Lower and Upper the Segnesboden on the Fil de Casson. Further to the west up to get to the hole and the Martin Segnaspass ( Segnespass ). The Martin hole is suitable only for experienced climbers, while access to Fil de Casson is possible with hiking equipment. Access to Segnaspass has worsened with the melting away of the former Firnfeldes.

Nature

In the 1980s, the village of Flims has set up a high alpine trail of which still exist many panels. In the steep northern flank to ibex and chamois hold on.

Geology

The top part of the ridge is greenish and very slaty and brittle from Verrucano rock, in this case. When Fil de Cassons the thrust surface of the Glarus overthrust from the south is very visible, however, it may be best pursued at the surrounding mountains. On Fil de Cassons it appears from afar visible only from the northern, less accessible perspective or at the very eastern end. An observant hiker noticed by the change under his feet but very well that he precisely on the thrust fault is a few meters north of the Seilbahnsation (see observation gallery). In the area more interesting geological phenomena are to discover:

Segnesboden

The upper Segnasboden is a post-glacial flood plain, including the following typical small Glacier Gorge: The earlier, verlustierende on the way over the Segnas floor to over 700 meters Breitenbach vanishes by almost 60 centimeters wide gap. In it, he plunges down the height of the lower Segnasboden, only the lowest part can be seen from the bottom ( on the way to Segnaspass ) as an open waterfall. In this next area chamber is found Martin's Hole, a rock window. The image of the upper Segnesboden (in the gallery) shows left in the shade ( in the northwest ) the Tschingelhörner with the Martin hole. To the right, also still in the shade, the gap of the Segnaspasses. To the right rises the Atlas up, a secondary summit of Piz Segnas. Recognizable both in the Tschingelhorn and on the Atlas is the distinctive dividing line of Verrucano overthrust, the World Heritage Glarus overthrust.

Observation Gallery

Geomorphology: On the broad back you can see a tundra landscape with frost -patterned ground

Weather: Again and again does the ridge as a small weather divide ( be careful!)

Again Geology: Even with half shoes you can run very close to the cable car station on the thrust line.

Geomorphology of the west Cassonsgrat: Panorama at Segnasboden with Tschingelhörner and Martin hole left in the shade.
