Film gris

Film gris ( German " gray film " ) is a series of films from the late 1940s and early 1950s that emerged within the genre or the movement of the film noir.

Definition

The term film gris was created in 1985 by the film historian Thom Andersen in his essay Red Hollywood. He describes a series of films that are classified as part of a film noir, thriller emerged pessimistic of the 1940s and worked to reach " major psychological and social realism." It Andersen was referring specifically to 1947-1951 resulting films had been produced, written or directed by a majority left filmmakers. He cited, among other works by Jules Dassin, Robert Rossen, Joseph Losey, Cy Endfield, Abraham Polonsky and John Berry, all of whom were no longer working in Hollywood because of their political stance during the anti-communist McCarthy era, but John Huston's The Asphalt Jungle. On the origin of the term film gris wrote Andersen, this seemed to be appropriate because " they taught us to Communism with desolation and gloom [in the original: ' greyness ' = gray ] equate, and these films are often dreary and depressing ." As an " exemplary performer " of these films he saw John Garfield.
