Filoviridae

Filoviridae or filoviruses are a virus family, which usually filamentous ( Latin filum, thread ' ), sometimes bazillusförmige, enveloped single (-)- strand RNA viruses [ ss ( - ) RNA ] belong. In its basic structure, these viruses can sometimes be bent in a U -shape. In length they vary up to a maximum of 14,000 nm and their diameter is constant at 80 nm, and they are therefore one of the largest known RNA viruses. Another special feature of these viruses have the two matrix proteins VP40 and VP24.

Within this family, the genus Marburg virus and Ebola -like viruses with a total of five different serotypes are described, which are distributed among the serologically and genetically distinct species. Both the Marburg virus and Ebola -like viruses cause in humans an acute illness with high fever and a high mortality.

The Marburg virus originates primarily from Africa and is found in the countries of Uganda, Kenya ( western Kenya ) and probably Zimbabwe. A further extension is held by scholars to be likely. In Europe 1967, the first cases of disease were documented. See Marburg fever.

The Ebola -like virus five subtypes are distinguished from each other and each named after the places of their first occurrence. With the exception of subtype Reston come all the other three virus types in this group from Africa and cause in humans, as already mentioned, hemorrhagic fever with very high mortality rate and easier portability. See Ebola fever. The subtype Reston is originally from the Philippines and in monkeys caused a fatal disease, but occurs in humans only a subclinical infection without disease symptoms.

The natural reservoir host for these viruses has not yet been found.

The filoviruses harm an infected cell does not directly by lysis, as they pinch off from the cell and thus remains intact. However, their accurate replication mechanism is still unknown.
