Fiq-Zone

The Fiq zone is an administrative zone of the Somali region in Ethiopia. It lies in the west of the region by the river Erer on the border with Oromia. According to 2007 census, it had 347,769 inhabitants, of whom 33 898 were living in urban areas. Capital of the zone is Fiq ( Fiiq ). In 1997, of 233 431 inhabitants, 99.89 % Somali, 99.98 % spoke Somali as their first language. 1.33% ( 2,912 ) were able to read and write.

The zone is divided according to the documents of the Central Statistical Agency of Ethiopia from 2007 to the eight woredas Fiq, Dihun, Segeg, Gerbo, Hamero, Legehida, Selehad and Meyu Muluke. In the documents of 1998 and 2005, however, the three woredas Legehida, Selehad and Meyu Muluke that the border with Oromia extending along, not mentioned. These areas are affected by the border dispute between Somali and Oromia.

Approximately 70 to 80 % of residents are ranchers, camels, goats, sheep and keep them in productive pastures cattle. They live as nomads and draw in normal years within the zone around; in poorer years, they go in the Woreda Babila and other areas of Jijiga zone in the vicinity of Imi and parts of Oromia region. 15-25 % of the population in Fiq are Agropastoralisten that combine agriculture ( sorghum and corn beside ) and livestock (cattle and sheep, and camels ). Up to 5% are urban residents who live on non-agricultural activities. Due to the trade relations with Somalia, the zone of the Somali shilling is used as means of payment in the south, the north is dominated by the Ethiopian Birr.

The Fiq zone is affected by the conflict between the separatist ONLF and the Ethiopian army, which has worsened since 2007. According to Human Rights Watch, especially the army has committed human rights violations against civilians in the zone. The Doctors Without Borders complained that they had been prevented from access to the Fiq Zone.
