Fischbrötchen

A fish sandwiches, fish roll in southern Germany, is a sandwich with fish and usually onions, often with pickles, sauerkraut and fried or deep-fried fish with tartar sauce.

The most common Bismarck herring or young herring is used for preparing a fish bun. However, fried herring, pickled herring, sprat, salmon or salmon cutlet, smoked mackerel and other fish species are used. Other ingredients such as one or more salad leaves can be added.

In fish burgers are no whole fish, but fish cakes and fish fingers. They are called in reference to Hamburg and Bremen. When crab rolls brown shrimp is taken as covering.

Fish sandwiches are usually sold at food stalls and fast food restaurants; often they also belong to the range of fish shops.

In Northern Germany fish sandwiches are considered part of the culture. Since 2011 is celebrated in May, the " Weltfischbrötchentag " on the Baltic Sea coast in Schleswig -Holstein and Mecklenburg- Vorpommern are on Saturday. The Hannover Messe was referred to their early days popularly known as " Fish Sandwich Fair " ' because the there gereichten on buns fish on Foreign visitors were a particularly striking feature of the fair.
