Description

A green flag indicates the outline of the continent of Africa, irradiated from behind by a white sun, which symbolizes the hope. The continent is surrounded by 53 gold stars, representing the Member States. Meanwhile, the South Sudan has joined as 54th member.

History

Since 1965 was the Organization of African Unity (OAU ), the predecessor of the African Union. From her the AU took over first from 2004, the flag with a broad green band at the top, followed by a small golden band. Among them was a white stripe, wearing the emblem of the African Union in the middle, followed by a small golden band and a wider green stripes below.

The colors of the flag had the following symbolic value:

  • Green symbolizes the African hope and striving for unity.
  • Gold stands for African wealth and a good future.
  • The color white represents the purity of Africa and work towards universal true friendship.
  • Red ( barely visible in the central ring ) stands for the African solidarity and the spilled blood in the struggle for freedom.

The monochromatic map of Africa in the middle of the flag is shown deliberately without borders and stands for African Unity.
